Near the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic you’ll find the large city of La Romana, which is the host to most of the country’s largest and most posh resort hotels. The rest of the country is known for its affordability, but that isn’t really true here as it’s a Caribbean playground of the well-heeled from all over.
Most guests fly in from Europe, Canada or the United States and check in at one of the large all-inclusive resorts, often not leaving until their flight home. The city itself has plenty to offer but these large resort complexes have everything guests need for a long stay.
La Romana is popular with many from southern Europe, and staffs tend to be quite multi-lingual, including English. This is not a good choice for budget travelers, but a great choice for those looking for something exclusive.

As stated, most visitors to the area choose La Romana for the luxurious lifestyle it represents. Here you’ll find extremely nice and well appointed all-inclusive resorts that offer a lot to do right on-site.
Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy high end shopping, scuba diving, fine dining, and deep sea fishing as well as just relaxing at the resort’s pool and spa. Many who visit do so with the intention to golf at one of the area’s world class courses.

A constant breeze, mild to warm temperatures and a sunny demeanor are three qualities that La Romana is known for.
Throughout the entire year, rain falls but usually not long and helps to give a break from the sun. The true rainy season however, is from May to November where it sometimes rains every day. This is also the time that hurricanes are possible so it’s best to keep an eye on the weather when visiting. Even so, you’ll find that the sun has a way of breaking up the clouds throughout the day.
When traveling during the other months of the year, you’ll find less rain, more sun and cooler temperatures. When packing, remember to bring light clothing that can be layered as well as a swimsuit or two.

There are quite a few cheaper hotels in La Romana itself, but nearly all tourists come to stay at one of the dozen or so large resort hotels in the area. Many of them are all-inclusive and on impressive grounds, most notably the famous Casa de Campo Resort. The main resorts are all quite expensive by Caribbean standards and extremely expensive by Dominican Republic standards.
The all-inclusive resorts in La Romana tend to offer much better value, especially if you can get a good package including airfare.
Even though the Dominican Republic is known for having some of the best prices in the Caribbean, visitors will still see some price changes throughout the year. During the winter months, be prepared to find that hotel rates jump up quite a bit as well as the amount of people visiting.
If you wish to skip the higher prices and crowds, consider a visit during the off season or even during one of the shoulder seasons. The month of May and the months of late fall offer both lower prices and great weather without the large crowds that usually come with winter.
The summer and early fall are considered the low season with lower prices than the rest of the year but a chance of rainier days and storms.

Unless you are ready for a very long drive in, you’ll be landing at La Romana International Airport. It’s a large and busy airport with many commercial flights coming in from all over the Caribbean, North America, and Europe.
